DON’T DO THAT

As the Tabernacle is the centre around which the whole Israel camp and life revolved so In Revelation the “throne room” of God is a sacred centre around which all that is revolves. See Revelation 4:4-8.

In the Tabernacle and Temple God sits enthroned above the cherubim within the holy of holies so in Revelation He sits in a cosmic holy of holies amidst the cherubim. So that the throne room is not simply royal it is sacred. The reign of God is linked with both holiness and political reality.

The throne itself manifestly stresses majesty and power but the being that is at the center of the throne, the being that reveals the nature of that majesty and power and how it expresses itself in redemptive power is a slain Lamb that surrendered itself to slaughter in order to redeem. See Revelation 5:6, 9.

These two images, God’s throne as the center of the universe and the Lamb as the center of the throne express God’s majestic power and grace, His might and His redeeming heart. The correct response to all that is what we see in the book of Revelation.

Brutal, ruthless Rome claimed all power and insisted on worship (see chapter 13). The one true God alone has universal power and He claims worship. Those with eyes to see and ears to hear and hearts to respond worship God and the Lamb who is at the center of the throne. Chapters 4—12 and chapters 14—21 are saturated with images of worshipers giving God and the Lamb the praise that is due them (just take a look at chapters 4 and 5 as illustrative).

Sandwiched in between these large segments of God worship is chapter 13 where those that “dwell on the earth” (as distinct from those that “dwell in heaven”) worship the beast. See Revelation 13:4, 6, 12-17.

Whatever else Revelation teaches us it teaches us this: no one is to be worshiped except the Lord God and the Lamb. In Revelation the Roman Empire with its gods and its sometimes deified rulers is the form that satanic opposition to God takes. Whatever form it takes today or tomorrow the word in Revelation will remain the same; we’re not to worship it. See Revelation 19:10 and 22:8-9. “See that you don’t do it!” We’re to worship God alone. Not governments (good or bad), not angels (good or bad), not persons (good or bad)—nothing and no one but God!
